Preparing for the Test

When you arrive at the private gynaecology clinic in London for your colposcopy, you will have a chance to talk to the doctor and ask any questions before the procedure. You will need to undress from the waist down unless you are wearing a loose skirt or dress than can be pulled up out of the way. You’ll then be asked to make yourself comfortable on the examination couch.

The Colposcopy Procedure

Having a colposcopy is a lot like having a smear test as the doctor will use a speculum to hold open the vagina. A special magnifying instrument called a colposcope will then be used to examine the cervix. The colposcope does not need to be inserted into your body at all, so you won’t feel anything while it is being used. The doctor may perform another smear test to confirm the results from the first. A special liquid will also be applied to reveal where the abnormal cells are located. Sometimes, a sample of these cells will be taken. You might not feel anything, but some women do experience a cramping sensation for a few minutes after a biopsy is taken.

After the Test

The whole procedure should be over in about 15 to 20 minutes. The speculum will be removed and you’ll be given a few minutes to rest on the couch. You’ll then be ready to leave the private gynaecology clinic and go back to your normal routine. You will soon get the results of the tests conducted during your colposcopy, which will tell you whether any further treatment at the London clinic is required to get rid of abnormal cells that could develop into cervical cancer.
