Who should get a Flu Jab

Seasonal influenza (flu) is unfortunately unpredictable and we all risk catching it every winter. Anybody can have flu jab and not only high risk just as NHS vaccinating all staff so we can protect yourself and others.

If you (or your family members) are mentioned in the below vulnerable categories you should consider booking your Flu vaccine ASAP:

  • older people
  • the very young
  • pregnant women
  • those with underlying disease, such as chronic respiratory, cardiac disease or diabetes
  • those who are immunosuppressed

This year you are also recommended to have the flu vaccine if you are:

  • the main carer of an older or disabled person
  • a household contact of someone on the shielded patients list for COVID-19
  • a child aged 2 to 11 years old on 31 August 2020

Flu Jab effects

When a person is given the vaccine, the immune system (the body’s natural defence system) will produce its own protection against the influenza virus. None of the ingredients of the vaccine can cause flu.

The UK 2020 Flu Jab targets four strains of influenza virus following the recommendations by the World Health Organisation for the 2020/2021 season.

Having flu and coronavirus infection: a deadly threat

According to research released by Public Health England (as part of the drive to improve uptake of the flu vaccine), infection with flu and coronavirus at the same time can double a person’s risk of dying.

The paper found that those with flu and Covid-19 were 2.27 times more likely to die than those with Covid-19 alone. Those aged above 65 were at greatest risk.

The research, which describes the possible impact having flu and coronavirus infection at the same time over the winter as a “major concern”, also found that people with flu were less likely to test positive for COVID-19, potentially pointing to competition between the two viruses.

Getting flu this year may represent a double risk for ourselves and others.
