What is the Anomaly Scan ( 20 weeks scan )

The Anomaly Scan, also known as anatomy scan or mid-pregnancy scan is a very detailed pregnancy ultrasound scan performed between 18 and 22 weeks of pregnancy. This scan is performed with the purpose to check your baby’s developments.

Our experienced Sonographer will carefully and thoroughly check your baby. The four chambers of the heart will be looked at, as well as the kidneys, bladder, stomach, brain, spine and sex organs. The main purpose of this scan is to look if there are structural anomalies in your baby.

The vast majority of pregnancies are healthy, and this scan typically provides much-needed reassurance as well as really good views of your baby. Once the Sonographer has systematically checked and measured all that is required at the anomaly scan, they will often be happy to share some special views with you and take some photos for your baby’s album. .

In the unlikely event that the Sonographer will find some anomalies, this will enable you and your obstetrician  to take a proactive approach in planning care for the rest of pregnancy and make any special arrangement required for birth and postnatal treatment.

What does the Anomaly Scan look for?

In the vast majority of the cases, the detailed scan will show that your baby appears to be developing normally, so there is no reason to be worried or anxious in attending this scan. This scan appointment is still very much one of the high points of the pregnancy when you get to see you baby in different positions and you get to see views that are recognisable like a bent knee, stetched out leg, foot, hands, profile of face, four chambers of the heart beating etc . This can be quite magical moments for you.

The Sonographer will however be systematically looking for rare conditions, in order to exclude the possibility that your baby has any anomalies and providing you with reassurance and peace of mind.

Those uncommon conditions are:

  • Anencephaly (abnormality of the brain)
  • open spina bifida (spinal cord problems)
  • cleft lip or palate (abnormalities around the upper lip)
  • diaphragmatic hernia (a defect causing some abdominal contents to be in the chest)
  • gastroschisis (bowel defect)
  • exomphalos (bowel defect)
  • serious cardiac abnormalities (heart problems)
  • bilateral renal agenesis (kidney problems)
  • lethal skeletal dysplasia (bony problems)
  • Edwards’ syndrome, or T18 (chromosomal abnormalities)
  • Patau’s syndrome, or T13 (chromosomal abnormalities)

The  above list is not exclusive  and the systematic ultrasound survey of your baby from top to bottom may pick up other features that may  suggest other chromosomal abnormalities or  like congenital syndromes.

The placenta position is always noted on this scan as if it low lying, a repeat scan will be required later in the pregnancy to exclude placenta praevia

During the Anomaly scan, you can also request to know your baby’s gender. (this will require your baby not to be camera shy or too coy and crossing legs)
